It was a deep, dark ugly secret. Not to be talked about, especially with us light and airy 7th graders. The Holmwoods took me in for a couple of days while my parents dealt with the ugly stuff, arranged the funeral.

It was life-changing in many ways. Colored how I saw things for a very long time, and to some extent does even now, though not as much. My children will tell you, for example, that if they want me to flip out, all they have to do is fail to show up at home when they say they will. Missing people are a near-phobia for me. I think they finally understand that this is my baggage, but they have to live with it. They roll their eyes, but secretly I think they really do get it.

The gun rights thing? I could rant, but it would be NSFW. :)

Re: Remembrance

We would have been in 7th grade? I in theory agree with your belief - thank God it has not been tested in my immediate family.

Re: Remembrance

Thinking of you and yours today.

I hope you get your wish.

Re: Remembrance

I'm sorry for your loss DnW, my partner lost her grandfather to a senseless, random, brutal act many years ago as well and it is still very close to the surface for the entire family....
