Absolutely. Me too. It is beyond comprehension that they want to fill their children's heads with hate and hardened partisanship. I also predict a backfire at some point, when some of those same kids turn out to be gay, or worse yet, liberal.

They would much rather hear an inarticulate white guy. It is "scary" to them that a black person has so much power. They have demonized and painted this caricature of the black person and he flies in the face of that. They don't want their children to be "confused" by what they see; especially since it directly contradicts what they have told them for so many years.

As a former teacher, I often had my days interrupted for some politician who wanted to come in and hand out something then make a "few remarks." Nothing was said by the administration nor parents.

Hope we get back to a place with this President where the office is respected. Disagree if you must but be civil and have respect for the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES no matter what color his/her skin, religion, or cultural diversity. I know too naive; but I'd rather be that way than so filled with hate.

I really want to write a comment here. But for the first time in my entire cyber career, I am speechless after watching that video and reading this article.. What is with these people? Keep their kids home from school rather than have them watch a speech given by the President of the United States? Are they crazy?

The Republicans avoided the culture wars like the plague in last year's campaign until Sarah Palin became the standard-bearer last fall. Sure paid off for 'em, didn't it? Seems to be paying off now in terms of further undermining their party. I would have left this alone, but for the fact that it involves kids, education, and race -- three intersecting areas that I'm passionate about.

You know, even if it were a crummy speech I'd require my kids to watch it. The man is the duly elected PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. He deserves respect whether or not one agrees with his politics. If anyone wants to fingerpoint about undermining the strength of our country, let's start with these nutcakes who think it's perfectly okay to tell their children they can thumb their noses at what he has to say. When Reagan spoke, my oldest was in school. He was in private school, ironically, but I made him watch the speech with me anyway, because I wanted the opportunity to encourage him to work hard in school and make something of himself.

Whether race is the real issue or not, I can't say. I hope not. But, what I do think is that the uproar that has been seen in the last few days has been utterly ridiculous! It makes me angry. After reading the speech, I feel that it is a good speech with a good message. I hope kids listen to it and keep what he says in mind. Most importantly, I hope that kids are given the opportunity to hear it.

How about them boobs in Collin County Texas, dba the 'Plano ISD'; nixing Obama's speech? I mean, really now what a stretch!

I put my kids through PISD from Gullege elementary to Plano West Senior High; some of them are nothing but brain dead ideologs, and culture war mercenaries. Never missing a beat to resurrect 'the crusades 2.0.'
